3 Unique Ways to Set Goals
We’re tackling the way we set goals this time around. Why? Because many set goals just to say they have them but aren’t really getting anywhere.
There I said it!
Setting goals is not the most important thing! Some gurus may have you think that setting goals is all you have to do. Not so! We’re talking today about the “Why” behind the “What.”
Unless you have a strong, motivating reason for reaching a goal, you’re wasting your time setting it. So here are 3 unique ways to set goals that you will enjoy reaching!
I make all my dreams real by first identifying and then focusing on specific, tangible targets for what I want.
I maintain at least one clearly defined goal for every major interest and role in my life.
I set my goals, so they are directly aligned with my life's mission.
Let’s discuss each of them, one at a time.
I make all my dreams real by first identifying and then focusing on specific, tangible targets for what I want.
Remember that little twirly thing from Inception? Never knew the actual name for that toy.
It’s a great movie, might call for a couple of viewings though. The point is: dreams and reality can get confused sometimes. What about your dreams
You'll never make a dream real until you have something specific to aim at.
There is no way you can plan for, let alone work toward, a "better life." You can, however, stipulate a list of conditions that would define a better life. Then, each of those items can be made into a precise target you can aim at, and immediately begin to work towards.
So, dream your dreams. Then identify specific examples in the real world that best represent the desired qualities of your dream. Once you do this, you'll be well on your way to creating that "better life" you desire.
"In life, as in football, you won't go far unless you know where the goalposts are." ~ Arnold H. Glasgow
I maintain at least one clearly defined goal for every major interest and role in my life.
This picture is kind of creepy, but bear with me, it serves a purpose.
It’s been said that “all the world’s a stage.” We’re just actors playing different roles. In ancient times, before fancy special effects, a simple mask would highlight different characters that the same actor would play.
Well, how many different roles do you play in your life? Are you a spouse, a parent, an employee, a friend, an artist, and a caregiver? The list can go on and on…
Creating an ideal life, where all your roles are completely fulfilled, starts with setting clear goals.
If you never define what you expect, you will only get what life gives you, and that may be a whole lot less than what you want. Why leave things to chance? Every major interest and role in your life deserves its own series of goals.
Clearly defined goals for each of your roles provide a rewarding direction and an ever-present purpose for each area of your life.
"When we are motivated by goals that have deep meaning, by dreams that need completion, by pure love that needs expressing, then we truly live life." ~ Greg Anderson
I set my goals, so they are directly aligned with my life's mission.
Who can deny this little guy’s determination?
Any parent can relate to how focused a toddler is in those first couple of years. Look at all they accomplish in such a short time! They learn to talk, stand, walk, and even climb stairs!
It’s amazing that we spend those first two years teaching them to walk and talk. And the rest of the time telling them to sit down and shut up! Disclaimer: no good parent speaks to their child that way!
The point is: we can learn from a child’s determination. Your most powerful and inspiring goals are those that are directly aligned with what you value most.
Goals that are aligned with your life's mission are those that bring an ideal personal vision closer to reality. Mission-based goals will deliver the greatest sense of pride and satisfaction once accomplished. Remember, we spoke about mission in this post.
Therefore, as you establish your goals, put them to the test: How connected are they to what you value most? If they're not, change them or choose more "value-able" goals.
"Your goals, minus your doubts, equal your reality." ~ Ralph Marston
