The 10 Minute Guide to Your Mission in Life
“Your mission should you decide to accept it...”
Does that sound familiar? That's the intro to that 1970's show Mission Impossible. The TV show that spawned a movie franchise and further cemented Tom Cruise as Hollywood Royalty.
Did you know that familiar intro applies to YOU? What is your “Mission” and should you decide to accept it? Have you ever considered that before?
Life happens so fast and there is so much to do each day, that we can actually lose sight of what is truly important. That is our subject for this month.
Those of you who signed up for The Culpepper Communique, our monthly newsletter, are already familiar with this topic. We hope you also enjoyed your special gift. We invite all our readers to sign up as well. You won't be disappointed!
After discussing Motivation and Energy, this matter of Mission is even more important. Why? Because until you know what’s most important, you may be wasting the only life you have on things that don’t matter! That’s really something to consider, isn’t it?
That’s the purpose of our next two posts. I want to help you to find your mission. And then it’s up to you to live it, should you decide to accept it…
Five Big Points to Consider
I have a written list of my most important values.
I have a personal mission statement.
I am willing to trade my only life for what I value most.
I have a current list of the most important roles in my life.
I have a highly compelling vision of how my perfect life would look.
Let’s consider each of these, one at a time.
I Have a Written List of My Most Important Values
It doesn’t have to be that hard. You really only need a short list of values to have a well- balanced life. When you do, you're seen as Purposeful. Why? Because you have predetermined what you believe to be most important in your life. A condensed list of values gives you clarity.
"It's not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are." ~ Roy Disney
I Have a Personal Mission Statement
Have you ever considered this? Businesses have mission statements, why not individuals? When you do, you're seen as Self-governed. Why? Because you have a personal mission statement to guide and govern what you do. In the trials and chaos of modern life, you need a set of standards to help guide you through the good times and the bad.
"A test of what is real is that it is hard and rough. Joys are found in it, not pleasure. What is pleasant belongs to dreams." ~ Simone Weil
I Am Willing to Trade My Only Life for What I Value Most
What are you willing to die for? Shouldn’t you also be willing to live each day for those same things? When you are, you're seen as Passionate. Why? Because you'll do virtually anything for the things you enjoy and value most. When you are working toward an ideal that comes from the heart, you're naturally motivated and driven to do your best.
"Whatever you do, don't do it halfway." ~ Bob Beamon
I Have a Current List of Most Important Roles in My Life
Have you considered all the different roles you play in life? Husband, father, employee, friend, etc. When you’re clear on all of them, you're seen as Well-rounded. Why? Because you consistently stay up to date with all your roles and interests. You aren’t really a success in one if you’re failing in another.
"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful." ~ Albert Schweitzer
I Have a Compelling Vision of How My Perfect Life Would Look
How vivid is your picture of your ideal life, can you see it in color? If you can, you're seen as truly Inspired. Why? Because you have a truly compelling vision for what you want. The more compelling and desirable your vision, the greater will be your enthusiasm and motivation for achieving it!
"If, before going to bed every night, you will tear a page from the calendar, and remark, "there goes another day of my life, never to return," you will become time conscious." ~ A. B. Zu Tavern
To Sum Up...
Take 10 minutes and really review these 5 big points and discover what your mission is. People often talk about "finding themselves" or connecting with their "inner child." We're only lost if we choose to be. And who would take direction from a kid?
Instead, spend some quality time with yourself. Do some inner work to see if the above 5 sentences accurately describe you. If not, why not? What are your values, what are your roles and goals? How do you plan to reach them?
Trust me, you'll feel better afterwards. This mission is NOT impossible!
We'll have 5 more big points next time.
